When looking into which series/genres are the most popular in Japan, I thought I would look up the actual sales in Japan to see which genres were doing best on the home turf. Anime News Network posted two lists earlier this year. One of which was the Top 10 Bestselling Manga according to series, and the other being the Top 50 Bestselling Manga according to volume. These lists contain the top manga sales for the first half of 2018. By the end of the year these lists could look very different.

The Top 10 Bestselling Manga by Series in 2018 (first half) are,

  1. One Piece

  2. Attack on Titan

  3. The Seven Deadly Sins

  4. Haikyuu!!

  5. My Hero Academia

  6. Kingdom

  7. Black Clover

  8. The Promised Neverland

  9. Tokyo Ghoul:re

  10. One-Punch Man

It's no surprise that the majority of entries on the list are some variation of the Shōnen genre, with only Kingdom and Tokyo Ghoul:re being classed as Seinen. The most popular genres represented by these manga are Action, Adventure and Fantasy, both of which are incredibly prevalent in Shōnen series. There are also a few entries that fall into the Super Power genre which is a genre that is also reasonably popular in Japan, with the likes of Dragon Ball, One-Punch Man and My Hero Academia being some of the most popular ongoing series at the moment. Outside of those main ones there aren't many other genres being represented in this list, with things like Romance and Slice of Life missing completely.

  1. One Piece 88

  49. Space Brothers 33

  50. Ace of Diamond Act II 11

Once again, no surprise that a lot of entries on the list fall into the Shōnen genre with One Piece once again taking the top spot. The genres with the most series under their belts were Action, Adventure and Fantasy again but with Comedy and Drama also being included. Comedy being the genre that the most manga fell into with 14 series included under it. Some more uncommon genres were also represented with a few individual series falling into the Military genre as well as the Parody, Game and Ecchi genres respectively. Although the most represented demographic was Shōnen, there were also a few mature series that fell into the Seinen and Josei demographics as well two series that went into the Shōjo demographic. (It was also nice to see some of my personal favourite series make it high up on this list)
